What Is the Ethereum Shanghai Upgrade?

For Ethereum, the transition to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism was finalized in September 2022. Instead of using specialized mining hardware to solve computational challenges, anybody who wants to take part in validating on the network can now just stake 32 ether (ETH).

The March 2023 launch date was settled upon by the Ethereum development community on January 5th, 2023, for the rollout of the upgrade through a network hard fork. Beginning around the end of February 2023, users will be able to put the update through its paces on a public test network set up in Shanghai.
